Does Cesar Milan Use the Best Methods?

Cesar admits to being a dog psychologist, not a dog trainer. In one episode he tells his clients that using “good dog” is for training, not what he was doing with their dog. Not to say training isn’t an answer for psychological problems. I have seen Victoria Stilwell solve similar issues with her training methods many times.
I agree with these aspects of Cesar’s philosophy:
dogs need “discipline, exercise, and affection”
“high-energy working dogs . . . can develop issues when the basic needs of their breed are not addressed.” –Harley, Annabelle, and Memphis” episode of Dog Whisperer
treat your dog like a dog, not a human
Cesar has a place with some dogs, few and far between. I do not think his methods should be used casually or regularly in any home. Use positive dog training methods and consult a trainer if you need help (make sure to interview the trainer about their methods).
I believe in the following:
- dogs need leadership
- dogs need jobs
- dogs are dogs, not humans
- dogs need communication they understand (more…)
Our baby started crawling two months ago. Up until now, the dogs have been able to out run the baby. Just recently he has started to pull on the dogs and chase after them. My youngest Golden Retriever is extremely tolerant letting our baby crawl over him, hug him, and pull on him. I wish I could say the same for our other three dogs who look like they are being tortured.
A few days ago, my cocker spaniel started growling and nipping at the baby. Our first instinct was to scold the dog, after all the baby’s safety is first priority. We then started giving our dog options for escape such as going outside or laying on the back of the sofa. This worked for a little while, but the baby is persistent. So, I have started to train our cocker spaniel to respond to the baby’s advances by giving kisses. The dog licks the baby’s face, the baby laughs and then goes on about his business – so far, so good.
Do you have a bad dog? Does he drag your things into the yard, jump up on people, or generally ignore you? Is she head strong or pushy?
Maybe you are teaching him these dog behaviors. Here are the top 10 things we do that teach dogs to misbehave, and dog training tips you can use to change it!
1. Repeat a command multiple times: Repeating commands over and over teaches your dog to ignore you the first time.
- Try giving the command once, then luring your dog into position with a treat or toy or by gently placing him into the correct place.
- If you notice a particular command he frequently ignores, re-teach it from the beginning.
