Does Cesar Milan Use the Best Methods?

Cesar admits to being a dog psychologist, not a dog trainer. In one episode he tells his clients that using “good dog” is for training, not what he was doing with their dog. Not to say training isn’t an answer for psychological problems. I have seen Victoria Stilwell solve similar issues with her training methods many times.

I agree with these aspects of Cesar’s philosophy:

dogs need “discipline, exercise, and affection”

“high-energy working dogs . . . can develop issues when the basic needs of their breed are not addressed.”  –Harley, Annabelle, and Memphis” episode of Dog Whisperer

treat your dog like a dog, not a human

Cesar has a place with some dogs, few and far between. I do not think his methods should be used casually or regularly in any home. Use positive dog training methods and consult a trainer if you need help (make sure to interview the trainer about their methods).

I believe in the following:

  • dogs need leadership
  • dogs need jobs
  • dogs are dogs, not humans
  • dogs need communication they understand

I believe our dogs need leadership. They’ve been bred to assist humans and be oh so loyal. They will follow us to the ends of the earth. Learn how to lead your dog without being either bossy, or a push-over.

I believe our dogs need jobs. Again, breeding for thousands of years led to the desire for hunting, herding, guarding, and working for us. Find something your dog loves and help them do it! Don’t just throw them in the back yard to become bored.

I believe our dogs are dogs, not humans. They are highly intelligent, creative, loving, and did I say loyal? But their physiology is different from ours and they live by a different set of social rules. The Malibu Dog Training blog says, “treat a dog like a human and they will act like a dog, treat them like a dog and they will act like a human.” Learn about dog behavior, communication, and learning. Treat your dog like a dog.

I also believe our dogs need communication they understand. We can show them what we want with luring, shaping, and marking desired behavior (clicker or word). Learn how to teach your dog.

Dogs are “environmental learners” — I don’t recall where I read this but it is true. Dogs respond to their environment positively or negetively. Zooming through the street is more fun than coming to you if you are going to use punishment. Following a toy, treat, or target to get a reward while learning a new trick. This is the idea behind positive dog training.
